Sanctuary

I have been thinking a lot about values that led to the creation of ONE Spiritual Center in this unique moment in history and the Sanctuary movement, oneness, immigration policy, and the amazing work of the New Mexico Faith Coalition for Immigrant Justice.

I don’t see our immigration policy as a political issue, but instead a moral one, and it makes a powerful statement when groups of spiritual, moral, and law abiding citizens are willing to risk entering into legally risky areas as an act of non-violent, moral, civil disobedience. It says that something seriously unjust and immoral is happening and with enough spiritual and faith communities’ involvement I believe this has the power to effect our immigration process and policy. I believe this is already happening, and that it is necessary that we continue to stand up for what is right, even (especially) when it is risky, when it takes courage, when others try to pull you down for it. In the spirit of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, who stated that “our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter,” I choose to speak.
